Question 12

The townspeople present at the minister's revelation do not agree on exactly what they saw on the scaffold nor its significance. When have you interpreted an event differently from others? How can you account for differing views in your personal experiences? How can you account for them in the novel?

  1. Most everyday.
I'm a little different from most, I am a Christian.
Usually artists are a bit weird. They look at the world different then we would or critics. In this novel the time difference is an extreme reason.

  2. Today's world would contradict this novel in the time it was written in, because like rachel said, in the time the book was written the difference is an "extreme reason." I think everyones morals and belifs are WAY different from back then.

  3. The simplest explantion for it is that everyone sees what the want or expect to see. I can't think of any specific example in my own life at the moment, but it's kind of like the placibo effect. Someone who has a cold takes a pill thinking it will heal them, so it does, when in reality it was only a sugar pill. In the book, the townsfolk expect a certain thing to happen, so in their perspective that's what indeed occured.

  4. I think Sarah's example of the placebo effect is the easiest way of explaining this.

I think everyone views things in their own way. Everyone's thoughts are kind of like snow flakes. No 2 are the same. So in all reality I can't say I interpreted an event different then from others because everything anyone interprets is different from everyone else's views. So basically life itself is viewed differently then everyone else.

  5. Everyone sees things from their own perspective and has their own point of view. People have their own reasons for agreeing or disagreeing with something. I can't think of a specific example, but I could feel like something is right and someone else thinks it is completely wrong and maybe not the right decision. I think that people can't always explain why they feel a certain way in situations, but will still stick with their opinion anyway.

  7. I agree with everyone here. Everyone has their own opinions on everything and I think Sarah's example was a good way to explain this. Everyone thinks of something in a different way, and they always will. So overall, no one's thoughts are exactly the same as anyone elses and it will always be this way.

  8. As stated before everyone sees things the way they want to see them. Their feelings toward a subject before experiencing it influence their views greatly. Also many minor details are simply forgetten or confabulated by our imaginations.
For example I could have sworn that we were supposed to have the book finished by Friday but in reality it is due on Wednesday. Oops looks like I've got to due a bit of reading.

  9. As everyone else has already said, each and every person has their own opinions. Know matter how alike you are with someone, their will always be something that you see differently. Like Sarah said about the cold and sugar pill, people will believe that their cold will go away because their taking medicine for it. Most of the time though, its just the mind playing a game on you, making you think that it's actually working.

  10. I don't have any specific examples, but essentially any time anyone has a differing opinion they'll see things differently. It's all in how we were raised. The Puritans were raised to believe that every misaction is a sin. We were raised differently in this society.

  12. A very intreguing question. Mostly everyday, for the simple fact that I am a very arguementle person,i can account for a differing in point of veiws in my life when my parents were fighting before their devorce.

  13. I have a argumental side...ask my parents but i am used to the fact that i need to listen to different points of view to get a different concept of the story. Everybody judges and makes assumptions in a different way because no person is exactly alike. I can relate to my friends situations from there personal expierences and tell them what i think is the best for them. In fights there are always two sides to every story.

  14. I have seen thiungs differnetly from others in debates in government class and a at law forum i attended. i think that having these different views is awesome in the way that everyone can learn form one another. The novel is much differnt from today and how things are interpreted. instead of wearing scarlet letters we blush in a scarlet hue when others make judgements about us with things we may have done or assumed we have done.

  15. I went to an art presentation that a cousin had to put together for a class. My veiw of it was different i would say, than hers would have been, because she was the one who created the presentation and had put a lot of time into it and so looked at it in a different light. In the book there beliefs are much different than peoples are now, i think that is because of the times and because that way of thinking is not looked on as well anymore.

  16. I agree with almost everyone on this post. It is like what Mr. Leonard said in chem today. Everyone sees colors their own way but their is only one real color. Not everyone sees things the same way. It is all how you as a person perceive things. It also depends on how you live your life, is it a good or bad life? HOw long do you have to live or how long till you die?

  17. I also agree with everyone on this post.
Billy's example with the colors was really good.
Everyone has their own way of seeing things.
This might be stretching it a bit but i thought about dreams. You can look up online what your dreams mean but how do you know thats what it really means? You could think your dream means something totally different than what it says online. It just depends on which way you look at it.

  18. Alright, i do agree with everybody about this one.
and yes, i have been in different situations, and i have looked at situations differently from other people. i believe what i believe, and usually i dont let people get in the way of it. and a sin is a sin, there are moral sins though, but they will be forgiven if asked. but, it still doesn't give right to do so.

  19. I also agree with everyone. Even though sometimes it is hard, I try to see situations from different points of view but that doesn't mean I have to agree with the way other people see things. Sometimes people can change my opinion on things but I definitely am my own person. In the novel, it's obvious that there are differing views on the way to live your life. What some people would forgive, others would not. Although some of their morals seem extreme now, it was normal for their time and I think the reader just has to remember that it's not 2009 so their values aren't that crazy.

  20. Everyone is going to have a different opinion about various situations. No two people are going to feel the same about a subject, because no one grew up completely alike. How one was raised has a lot to say about how they view the world around them.

  21. People will choose to believe what they want to believe. To make it fair though, they should listen to both sides, since there will always be two different sides, no matter what.

  22. Most events are interpreted differently by people, for instance if someone accidently trips you in the hallway and you think they're just trying to start a fight. Others examples are hearing one side to a story of walking into an event in the middle, you don't always know what causes things to happen. Like in the book the people saw what they wanted to.

  23. Nobody is the same person. Of course you have people that believe differently. Time setting is a big difference too. Obviously people from the 21st century are not going to think like people from the 19th century. Times change and so do people. Now me, myself always usually see things in different ways.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I agree with Sarah. People see what they want to see and they hear what they want to hear. We all see things in different ways.

  25. Disagreement are an all day everyday kind of thing. People just dont see eye to eye, and they arnt expected to. Thats why I understand why the towns people all didnt think the same thing.

  26. Just today in my soccer game there were multiple instances when what the referee interpreted was different than what I interpreted. One time was when a Geneseo player kicked the ball out and then got to throw it in. I would say we saw things differently because we were in different locations so to me it looked like the other team kicked it out but from the referee's view one of our players touched it.
In the novel some people might have thought they saw something that wasn't actually there. Maybe if they were far away it could have looked like something was happening that wasn't. Also I agree with the above responses that people see what they want to see.

  28. There are many times in this book where things can be understood or implied differently. These people saw different things because that is how they interpreted the event. If one person saw the A as burned into Dimmsdale's skin then that is real and right to them but maybe not to the next person. I'm going to steal from austin and say that this happens in sports all the time. Coaches sometimes just see what they want to because it is better for their team, while officials are supposed to be outside this bias, but that is not always the case.
