  1. I guess I'll start this one off..

Well an obvious thing to trace throughout the novel is the Scarlet Letter, at the beginning, it symbolized "Adultery" and people ridiculed her because of it, but as time went on people said that it stood for "able" because Hester was such a strong woman.

When Hester was in the forest and she took off the scarlet letter, she felt as if a weight was taken off her, but when Pearl made her put it back on she felt as if the weight was put right back on and she was sad and mopey again.

The scarlet letter represents a weight that Hester must carry with her.

  2. a reacurring symbol in this book is the scarlet letter. Hester is forced to wear the scarlet letter for the rest of her life. the reason is because she committed "adultery". the scarlet letter letter is a red letter "A" for adultery. the scarlet letter is supposed to make Hester feel ashamed and embarassed of what she did. when she and Pearl were in the forest she threw the letter somewhere in the forest doing only that made her feel like a weight was lifted off her shoulders. also when she was walking in town she felt like everyone was when the "human eye" was watching her she felt like she shared the weight of the scarlet letter. the letter creates pain for her.

  3. The these is shame. Shame is the punishment of the society, and it takes the obvious form of the scarlet letter. Less obvious is the minister's hand on his heart, because both him and Hester feel the shame.

  4. i agreee with everyone but i feel that sin and evil really tie them all together. Hester sins by committing adultery with Dimmesdale and Dimmesdale sins for having a baby with her also. Chillingsworth is not properly taking care of his patient(Dimmesdale) and not fulfilling his job as a physician if he is not using it to his best intentions. Pearl makes fun of the other little kids in the town when she goes walking with her mother one day.
Evil is a strong word to use for this book but I believe that what Chillingsworth revenge on Dimmesdale is cruel and evil also fot the fact that it has lasted at least seven years. The book ties all the characters and the symbols("A") together by the sins they make or the evil that they stir up.

  5. I'm going to go with Jessie on this one, sin really seems like an important factor in the major events in this book. The first sin would be adultery committed by Hester and Dimmesdale. Then, I think that Dimmesdale keeping a secret sin could also be a sin because it goes against the Puritan law. Then, there's always Chillingworth bringing around even more sin by torturing Dimmesdale and Hester. He lets Dimmesdale see his good side and then he shows his evil side and it keeps going back and forth. He tortures Hester by making her not tell Dimmesdale about him. Sin causes most of the problems in the book.

  6. One theme that occurred later in the novel was hate. Chillingworth hated Dimmesdale for what he did and tried to make him suffer for it. When Hester started thinking about the things Chillingworth was doing, she began to hate him.

Evil and Sin are also other themes throughout the novel. Sins were everywhere, whether they were started or not. Adultery, hate, torture, and many of the people who had "secret sins" are a few examples. Evil was also tied in with the sins. Hester hated Chillingworth because what he was doing to Dimmesdale was evil. The forest represented evil to the Puritans.

  7. I think that the scarlet letter would definately be the symbol or theme for this story. Not only is it the title, it is repetitive through the whole book. It repesents Hesters sin, and although she is forced to wear it, she wears it with dignity. Puritan beliefs are very strong and sinning is more than a big deal.

  8. I think there are a few but I'd have to agree that sin is the one theme that really stands out to me. The whole story is basically based on sins. Hester has to wear the Scarlet Letter because she committed adultery, a horrible sin. Dimmesdale also did the same, except his sin wasn't known to us throughout the entire story. However, he was hurting inside the whole time because he knew that what he did was very wrong.

  10. I agree with Carly that the symbol is the Scarlet Letter because it is repeated many times throughout the book. It has multiple meanings throught the book as well. It goes from meaning "adultry" to "able" and "angel". One word can represent so much.

  11. WELL FINALLY THE LAST ONE. One symbol that I don't think many people realized was one was pearl, to me she was for mmultiple reasons. One of them being that sins are meant to be "bad" but as we all know everything happens for a reason and whether it be good or bad sometimes there are results accurring after our sins. In this case hestor sinned and in a result of her adultry pearl was born. Just like any symbol pearl became more and more important throughout the novel, just like a real child.

  12. I agree with Jerrid( sorry i spelled you name wrong eairlier). I think pearl was a symbol throughout the story. She was a living being that was produced via sin. She was a devil child who spoke odd incantaions at other children and had imaginary friends. This all scared Hester.
I also think that Pearl was a good symbol becasue she proves that good things can come from breaking the rules. This is a good example of how society changes. At some point somebody had to look at an unmarried woman and say its ok. And not punish them for their sin.

  13. I agree with everyone that said sin.
I think sin was a major theme in this book. Hester commited a sin. Dimmesdale commited a sin. Chillingworth commited a sin. Pearl was the product of commiting a sin. And not to mention all the other secret sins that the other people had made that were not exactly mentioned in the book. Also there were punishments for all types of sin whether it be secret or not. Hester and Dimmesdale both experienced punishments even though one sin was secret and the other was not.

  14. The scarlet letter is a nonstop symbol in this novel. At first she felt guilty about the letter "A". and it stood for adultery. Later it became more of a public embarrassment, and filled her with shame. After that, it became part of who she was. Her own daughter could not recognize her without the scarlet letter. She eventually felt as if the letter stood for something much different, instead of adultery she felt as if it stood for able. That is because the life that she had to life caused her to be a strong willed women, able to to many things.

  15. Two major symbols were Sunlight and Darkness. They reoccur throughout the novel, showing who has been blessed with the light, and who has been cursed with the shadows. Light commonly shines around Pearl, being the energetic little spark plug that she is, showing that for all her quirks and differences, she is blessed. Darkness commonly surrounds Hester and Chillingworth, showing that they have been singled out by Providence for their misdeeds. Darkness surrounds Hester for her sin of Adultery, and it pervades Chillingworth to symbolize his descent into evil.

  16. I think the major theme in this book is sin, the scarlet letter being the main symbol. It represents Hesters sin of adultery, tortures Dimmesdale when ever he sees it for it reminds him of his secret sin, chillingworth's torturing of Dimmesdale, Pearl, as a product of Hester and Dimmesdale's sin, is like a living scarlet letter to Hester, and this letter A went from standing for "adultery" to "able", after the people of the town see how strong of a woman Hester really is, and in my opinion this represents the sin of judging and cruel punishment of the puritans.
Evil is another theme in this book, the main symbol being chillingworth, " the black man", mistress Hibbins, and Pearl.

  17. i agree with Rae when she says the main theme is sin. i also think that the rosebush is very important becasue it sets up the whole, puritains that sin and their last taste of freedom.

  18. Sin is a theme that develops throughout the book. The scarlet letter is the symbol of Hester's sin and Dimmesdale's too. Because of Hester, Roger sins when he makes a deal with the Black Man. Hester can see the sins of others when they look at the scarlet letter. Pearl is a living symbol of sin. She is viewed by many as a demon child or a witch-baby. The Puritans were right to punish and look down on sin but they went about it the wrong way. What the did to Hester looks like they expected her to just die after punishment. In the end all the sins are released. I think the community should have shared the sin rather than putting it on one person and leaving her for dead.

  19. I think the thyme of the book was about sin and how it effects people's loves. Hester's and Dimmesdale's lives where ruled by the sin that they commited whether people knew about it or not it effected them deeply.

A good moral of the story should be about confession. Dimmesdale died because of his secret. He didn't acheive peace untill he openly confessed his sin.

There was a lot of good vs evil/bad symbols throughout the bookk. with the sunlight and darkness, and flower and weeds.

  20. I agree with the theme of sin, but think it is more specific to the idea of secret sin. The reader sees evidence of open sin right from the start with Hester and the scaffold but as the book progresses it constantly touches on the people's secret sin in the way that Hester can sense it. This puritan town is full of sin even if it is not noticeable. Obviously the main character demonstrating this theme is Dimmsdale, with the secret sin that destroys him eventually.

  21. The scarlet letter is a reccuring theme in the novel. At first it symbolises adultery and sin and it gradually changes throught out the book to represent "angel." Pearl is another example of it, shes a constant reminder to Hester of her sin. They way she can catch the sunlight while hester can't is just another example.
