The likelyhood of their success as a couple? Not very high. Dimmesdale may be an overall good guy, but in my opinion, he's a wimp. He needs to fess up to his sin so he can stop mopping around. Either that or live with it. The only way their relationship would work out was if he did something of the sort, otherwise he's going to be too busy beating himself up about it to even look in Hester's direction, which I'm sure is a necessary part of any healthy relationship.
I can't see them succeeding as a couple. I don't understand how the hooked up in the first place but that may be because I did not know Hester before she wore the scarlet letter. I think that this whole incident has changed both of them too much for things to be like they were before.
That is an intreging question. I believe the likelyhood of their relationship becoming stronger and having a success is a lot higher than most of the other fellow readers think. The reason being that Dimmsdale to me is a man who cares very much what other people think, but he does care about Pearl and Hestor. So if their "relationship" turns into love than nothing can stop their relationship from being a success.
I can't really see them ending up as a couple. I think too much has happened and a lot is going on in both of their lives. I feel like I don't know enough about how their relationship was before Hester started wearing the scarlet letter. At this point, I still don't know how they really feel about eachother when it comes to thinking about getting together again.
i have to agree with jerrid on this one. I dont think dimmesdale is a wimp, hes just on a very high podium in society, and the social pressures on him are obviously immense. You can tell he cares very deeply for both hester and pearl, so if he puts them first in his life, i guess things between the two could work out.
I agree with Anna and Jerrid.Dimmesdale really does care for Pearl and Hester, and likewise Hester cares for him. Also Pearl took a great liking to him.I believe they were in love at one time and may still be in love.I also agree with Anna that Dimmesdale is not a wimp.I understand why it would be diffcult for him to reveal his secret because of the highly respected role he plays in the community.Him revealing his secret would cause problem within the community and within the people's minds and souls.
I think that Hester and Dimmesdale would have been a great couple. They were like a match made in heaven. Except of course, that Hester was indeed married to Chillingworth. I have a question. Was Chillingworth's name Chillingworth before he came to the colony? If Dimmesdale can find the courage to step up and be a man, the chances of sucess between him and Hester will skyrocket. Kourtney Vara 3rd Hour
I think it will go no where. Hester obviously has made a bad name for herself and her and Dimmesdale making a public relationship can turn the people on Dimmesdale. Now if I were Hester and truly cared for him, I wouldn't go any further in the relationship. Now if Dimmesdale doesn't care, that's another point.
i believe that both Hester and Dimmesdale care for each other deeply, and i dont think either of them are wimps, but i cant see their relationship succeeding in the future due to all the ridicule and embarrassment in the past, and i think the past sin would make it to hard for them to have a normal releationship, and only lead them to dwell on their sin even more.
I think Dimmsdale loves and cares about Hester and her well-being, because if he didn't, he wouldn't be in this constant internal struggle with himself. However, I don't think they could make a very good couple. I think Dimmsdale is a man who made a mistake in a time of weakness. If he had wanted to be a father and a family-man, i don't think he would have gone into the priesthood. I think Hester did what she did in a moment of weakness as well because she was so unhappy in her marriage. In short, I think lust was more of a motivating factor here than true love. That is why i don't think these two people could make a successful couple.
To be honest I don't think they have any success as a couple. Dimmsdale cares way too much about what others think, so I don't see him wanting Hester in his life right now. And Hester has a lot going on in her life as well with Pearl. I just think it would be a rather awkward situation if the two were going to get together.
I don't believe they will ever be a couple. If they start, then people might make the connection that a little something something happened beforehand, and then Dimmesdale is going to be walking around as a Red Alphabet Letter...
With what we have learned about the Purtain lifestyle, I believe the likelihood of Hester and Dimsdale becoming a couple is slim to none. If Hester really loves him she will not let something happen between the two of them. If the public were to find out that he is the father of Pearl (eventhough by now someone should know/be able to tell) he would get in A LOT of trouble considering he is a minister. As much as I think that the two of them becoming a couple would paint the perfect ending, it would most likely never happen.
I dont think Hester and Dimesdale would ever be a couple, even if this whole thing turns out well. They could have a big happy ending that would bring them closer together but I don't see Dimesdale giving up being a priest to be with anybody. They could end up good friends who have a kid but never a couple
I think to much has happened in Hester's life for her and Dimesdale ever to be a couple. If they did Dimesdale would get in troulbe like Hester did and they both would be rejected from society. Pearl wouldn't have a very good life if her parents are discluded forever.
I do not see Hester and Dimesdale's relationship ever leading to being a couple. If they did become a couple it would be obvious that something happened between them and dimesdale could possibly have to wear the letter "A" and that would be sad for Pearl.
I do believe that they could end up being together and leading a happy life with Pearl. Hester is still in love with him, Dimmsedale is a good, kind man, and Pearl takes a liking to him as well. However, this would only work out if Dimmsedale gathers his courage to confess his sin and face his consequences. It may take a while for them to get together, but they could have their happily ever after. But we must understand that it's hard for Dimmsedale to come clean considering the fact that he is a highly respected man who everyone believes him to be "pure".....
I don't think that they will end up together. I think that both of them regret the whole situation. Dimesdale would probably have to wear a letter "A" because people are eventually going to find out what had happened. Plus, it wouldnt be a good situation for Pearl to be in.
I predict that their relationship will develop healthily. We do not know the story behind the sin, but there is obviously a strong link between the two. In those times, to even consider such an act would require a passion equal to or greater than that of a modern healthy marriage.
i think that they wouldnt be a very successful couple. he cant even admit that he was the one that Hester cheated with. that just means he is probably not willing to do anything for Hester because he has been watching her go through all that shame and has done nothing yet about it. it also does'nt help that he is the priest and what he did is wrong, so when or if people find out he won't be very popular anymore. i think if they really do love eachother it won't work out because all odds are against them.
well this question differs from different point of view i guess. if he is going through all this punishment when other people don't know what he has done then i think when people do know what he has done he will be more relived and relaxed and his relationship with hester will be a successful. but thats just in my point of view, thinking that he will get over it and continue on with his life with hester
I think that if Dimmesdale would be able to confess his sin and relieve his built up guilt, as a couple, Hester and Dimmesdale would eventually be able to stay together and work everything out.
I believe that there relationship could definitly last. One could say that a similar situation has happened in my family and everyone seems to be quite happy with it. (seems being the important word)
I think that because Dimmesdale is not ready to share the fact that he has a secret sin will keep them apart or at least from Hester or keep Hester from fully helping Dimmesdale.
I believe that in a modern day society the two would have an extremely high chance of continuing their relationship. Unfortunately, they are in a strict Puritan setting where he is a person of high stature and she is still married. Dimmesdale does care for Hester and Pearl and for Puritans to commit an act they must have had a strong bond and love for each other.
Although it's not good for his reputation as a minister, i think Dimmesdale will confess his part in Hester's sin and they will do whatever they can to continue their relationship. If he did not care about Hester he would not be trying to defend her.
Even after the forest scene where Dimmesdale and Hester reconnect and have hope for a relationship, I still don't think it will work out. It's obvious that Dimmesdale cares about Hester by the way he defends her, but the way I see it, if he truly cared about her, he would make his role as Hester's husband and Pearl's father his first priority.
They will be marginally successful. It will take some time for Pearl to warm up to Dimmesdale, and even after she does Dimmesdale's health is so poor that he probably won't be around for long. It's been acknowledged that the only reason Dimmesdale has lasted this long is due to Chillingworth's medicines. Without them, and with the added stress that Pearl provides, his heart will give out real soon. And then Hester and Pearl will be alone again, hilariously tragic as that is.
I believe that Hester and Dimmesdale would have a decent chance of being a couple, if Dimmesdale would have confessed a long time ago. I think he is almost being a bit selfish by not telling his sin. And like other people said, if he really truely cared about Hester and Pearl he would put them first.
I think that if they love each other enough that its possible. But I also think that if they are going to have a chance they are going to have to run away and never come back!
I disagree with Carly and Elizabeth. I think that both of Hester and Dimmesdale, Dimmesdale especially, have too much to overcome in their life before they could succeed as a couple. I say this because I honestly believe that the only way they could succeed is if they ran away from the town they're in, and abandoned the Puritan religion. I think that their religion is just too big a part of their life for them to overcome the stress and weight of their past sins and lives.
I agree with Jerrid for sure. I think that love is a powerful thing. Dimmesdale cares too deeply for Hester to just die and he can't just sit there preaching anymore about sins when he himself has committed one. He is such a religious man that he has to care very strongly for Hester to commit that sin in the first place. I have faith that they will come out in the end and surprise all of you who doubt them.
I would like to see them succeed as a couple just to show that they can beat the odds against them. It also seems that relationships that conquer the hardest of problems turn out stronger in the end.
I think their relationship has potential. if Dimmesdale would confess and relax i think he would settle himself nicely in a family with Hester and Pearl. i think if they were willing to risk adultry for each other before they would risk anything to be together again.
I think that they will eventually have a relationship because if Dimesdale didn't care so much about Hester, he wouldn't be feeling so guilty. I think that if they didn't have Pearl, there would be nothing there though.
I think that Dimmesdale and Hester will come through as a couple. I agree with Saralyn when she said that is Pearl wasn't alive that there love for each other wouldn't be as strong. Pearl has made their love for each other stronger and what he risked as a minister to commit adultery with her shows how much he cares for her.
I think that for the situation of the book the likelihood of Hester and Dimmesdale being together is slim. The only way they could be together is if they ran off but Hester refuses to leave the town because she thinks it is part of her punishment.
It's still possible that they could follow through with the plan to leave Boston. I don't see it as being hard for them to run away from it when Dimmesdale has been the whole time.
I think that they will grow closer as the time goes on. Excpecially because of all the time they are going to be put through. He seems to really care about Hester and Pearl, even though he doesnt show it in public.
I can see them being together. This secret bonds them together more than other relationships. Plus they have Pearl. The child needs some type of father figure. It will work out when it is meant to work out
I don't see them being together, because of their society, this would not be alloud and they would be ridiculed for it.. Although they could possibly if they were to leave town, but I don't see that happening.
I think it can work because it's a fictional book and everything is all "HAPPY ENDING WOO" and besides as we all know it's impossible for love to last forever and it will wear off after a period of time but thankfully due to shortened lifespans of the time period they'll probably die before they start to hate each other.
They probably have a good chance of living happily together in somewhere far away. There's no chance of them being happy in their town. Hester has already gone through so much and to reveal the priest so many years later would just bring about new problems.
Hester and Dimmesdale could not be together in the setting they are in now. If they truly want to be together they would have to leave the area and go somewhere where they can start all over again. If they stay where they are and try to be together the town will turn on Dimmesdale and he is too much of a coward to take the heat.
There's a chance they could be together. They share the same burden. They have a closer bond by what the've been through. They also have Pearl a tangible link for the pair. I don't think they could over openly be together in the town, but if they can find a way to leave together it might work. But from past experiences fate is not quite on their side.
I believe that their relationship will last. It seems that Hester and Rev. Dimmesdale truely care about one another. They seem to have a really strong bond.
Dimmesdale is too much of a coward to ever make that relationship work. Sometimes you just have to be a man and say what should've been said a long time ago.
I do believe that they could work things out and possibly be a couple again. They have both been through a lot and have both wronged but I think it has only brought them closer together. I think it may be hard but it's possible for them to put aside the past and focus on the future.
I don't think it would work. As Austin said how did they hook up on the first place? Is Hester a whore?? And if they did make it as a couple isn't the minister suposed to be celebate?(idk how it is spelled) So how would they explain that one? They seem like two totally different people that could not make a relationship together work.
What im guessing is that they'd maybe like it to work out, but it would be hard to accept the fact that they have both sinned against God together. It would be nice to be able to be like "hey, let's be together", but it's alot more complicated than that, and it may end up being real awkward for the both of them.
I believe that although Hester and Dimmesdale care for eachother, i doubt it would work out. If anything between them did for sure happen, I don't believe that Dimmesdale would have enough bravery to share it with the public. If anything, they would have a secret relationship. But, what are the chances of that working out in the long term?
Mr. Dimmesdale is already had to hide it for seven years, and the fact that he hasn't done anything to be with Hester. He is always the outspoken one that doesn't do what he needs to do. Because he is to afraid to stand up for the one thing that he needs to. Instead Dimmesdale sulks, and puts himself at an extreme low granite its because of his belief.
Hester and Dimmsdale could try to work it out, but it would probably wouldn't work. They are both two different people. There is also the concern of if people in the town see them together, it might be an awkward situation. Ali Stevenson - 1st hour
I think that Hester and Dimmesdale truly do love eachother but i dont think they can be together. It would be too hard to try and hide it from the poeple in the town. If Dimmesdale decided to come clean instead, i think something would happen to him before they could be together.
I think that they could be a couple. I think they might just need to get away from everything that has happened in the past 7 years and start over again.
The power and compassion is their, but i dont think that this relationship will go anywhere. Its not like im not for the love stories and all that stuff. Just in a period of time like that the publics opinions matter much more then now, even though it shouldn't.
I think all would be better between them if dimmesdale would just admit to his sin and not hide it any longer. If he did that then ya, i think they would last fine as a couple. But on the other hand if he doesn't admit to his sin well then i don't know i don't think eveything will work out like they want it to.
I do not think they would end up together. They never really show the two together in an intimate setting. Dimmesdale in a way is a wimp. He is too afraid to stand up and admit his sin and stand there while Hester goes through everything. Like Corey states if he admit his sin then they could be together. But, I don't think he will admit it.
Well this question is tough to answer after finishing the book, but I will try to be subjective. Hester and Dimmsdale obviously love each other, but this love have been hidden away for so long it seems impossible to ever just let it out. If they were to get away from Boston, I think they could have a happier life, but Dimmsdale's sin would still haunt him if he didn't confess.

ReplyDeleteWhat im guessing is that they'd maybe like it to work out, but it would be hard to accept the fact that they have both sinned against God together. It would be nice to be able to be like "hey, let's be together", but it's alot more complicated than that, and it may end up being real awkward for the both of them.
ReplyDeleteI believe that although Hester and Dimmesdale care for eachother, i doubt it would work out. If anything between them did for sure happen, I don't believe that Dimmesdale would have enough bravery to share it with the public. If anything, they would have a secret relationship. But, what are the chances of that working out in the long term?
ReplyDeleteI agree with sarah walker..
ReplyDeleteMr.

ReplyDeleteThe power and compassion is their, but i dont think that this relationship will go anywhere.

ReplyDeleteCorey Skolek, 3rd hour
