Question 9

Dimmesdale says "Of penance, I have had enough! Of penitence, there has been none!" Explain how penance and penitence are different. What penance has the minister undergone?

  1. Penance- is a type of self-punishment to show sorrow for having committed a sin

Penitence is-regret or sorrow for having committed sins or misdeeds.

The ministers penance includes his very late night vigils, and when he "cuts" and inflicts pain on himself. i would also consider his constant agony over his sin penance, because he has been very miserable and depressed because of it.

  2. Penance is punishment as a "token" repentance for sin. Penitence is regret for one's sin. Penance more of something you actually do in order to have you sin "taken back". Where as penitence is only regreting the sin that you commited (not taking actions in order to punish yourself). In Chapter 11 we learn of Dimsdale's penance; which includes beating himself with a bloody whip. Even though the anguish Dimsdale goes through is probably considered penitence, I view it as penance because it is killing him (like Bathany said).

  3. Penance is a type of punishment put on one's self to show sorrow for commiting a sin.
Penitence is regret for one's wrongdoing.
The difference here is that penance means physically hurting one's self because of what they have done, as to pentinence which is just having the regret but not actually harming themselves. In the book, Dimsdale feels regret for what he has done and in order to deal with this he beats himself with a bloody whip and cuts himself. This would be an example of penance, for the reason that he is physically harming himself due to this regretfullness. I agree with what Bethany said as well about how his "constant agony over his sin" could be considered penance because it is constantly hurting him.

  4. Penace is when you punish yourself to show your sorry for commiting a sin. Penitence is the act of regretfulness in committing a sin. The difference between the two is that penace means physically punishing yourself for what you have done, and penitence means feeling regret, but not inflicting harm on yourself. when dimsdale feels bad about his sin he whips and cuts himself. He is inflicting pain on himself physically and mentally over what he did, and thats what is killing him.

  5. Penance is punishement. Penitance is repentence.
He has not repented but he has been punished none the less. He whips himself and also has the hangings in his room.

  6. Penance is punishing yourself for sin and penitance is regretting your sin. The different of the two is that penance is physical and penitance is emotional. Dimmesdale has whipped himself-penance.

  7. The definition and difference of Penance and Penitence has already been listed.
He is, of course, referring to the whippings and whatever else. But, is he saying by "Of penitence, there has been none." that he doesn't regret the sin, or maybe doesn't believe it's a sin? It sounds like that, but he doesn't seem to be too happy with the choice.

  8. As Jacob said the definition and difference have been listed already.
The penance is the pain he inflicts on himself (i.e. the whippings.) However, he feels no penitence, or regret, which also causes him to create more penance on himself as he thinks he should feel awful.

  9. Theres no need to repeat the definitions again.

The minister has committed both penance and penitence but in my opinion the worse of the two for him would have to be penitence. This is because he lives with this regret and sorrow which is slowly killing him. While the penance does not help his condition it is self inflicted while with penitence he feels he has no choice but to keep it secret even though he wants to tell people.

  10. While Penance is an act of punishing yourself for a sin you committed, penitence is a feeling of regret for having committed a sin.

As an act of punishment, Dimmsdale rigorously whips himself, and keeps vigils night after night, often in darkness. However, his greatest penance of all, in my opinion, are his constant feelings of guilt and regret for the sin he has committed.

  11. Panance is self punishment. Dimmesdale has been abusing himself as a way to repent for his sin. He no longer wants to repent this way. However, penitence is regret, of which he has none for the sin he committed. He does not regret the passion he felt with Hester.

  12. Penance could mean like all the mistery and drama or like self punishment and such going on. and penitence ic more like a regret for the sin. He has penance because he is like going insane with everything and its tearing himself apart. How he walked onto the stage waiting for people to show up for he could tell them the adultary he has gone through

  13. Dimmesdale has had penance for his sins because he has vigils, self-mutilation, and fasts. He hasn't had any penitence because he doesn't regret the sin that he and Hester committed. Besides the fasts and vigils, Dimmesdale is constantly tortured for his sin because it is in secret and he feels horrible for depicting a pure clergyman when really he is sinful.

  14. Dimmesdale has had enough penance for his sin because he is constantly punishing himself for it. However, even though he punishes himself he does not regret the sin that he committed because he truly loves Hester and at the time they felt like it was the right thing to do because of the love that they shared for each other.

  15. Penance is the voluntary self punishment inflicted as an expression of repentance for doing something wrong, and penitence if feeling or showing sorrow and regret for doing something wrong.
Dimmesdale says he has had enough penance because of his self-condemnations, vigils and fasts. After all, the reason for his illness is the pain he inflicts on himself, and the fact that he's letting it chew himself up. He says there has been no penitence because he simply does not regret his sin. I also think he said this in a way to kind of compare himself to Hester, because she is forced to wear her sin on her breast to show people of her wrong doing, where Dimmesdale's is hidden.

  16. penance is a type of punishment that one does to themselves; penitence is simply feeling sorrow for the wrong you did and not doing anything to fix it. Dimsdale hides what he did wrong therefore he did nothing to fix it.

  17. Pennance means a type of punishment that one does to themself and penitence means feeling sorry for what they did worng. Dimsdale punishs himself by inficting pain and he shows no penitence because he does not come out and say what he did.

  18. penitence mean-sorrow for ones sins or fault, and penance means-devotion performed to show sorrow for sin. the penance is the harm he does to himself. he doesn't feel any penitence for what he has done.

  19. Penance is when someone makes themselves have a punishment. Penitence is the guilt one has for their wrong doing. Dimmesdale trys to hide his wrong doings from himself and everyone else so he wont admit what he did wrong.

  20. Penance is the literal punishment and pertinence is feeling sorrow for the sins. Dimmesdale, despite constantly punishing himself, can not bring himself to feel sorry for what he's done. Perhaps he really does not feel it was wrong, and his questioning his entire moral code.

  21. Penance-punishing oneself out of sorrow for committing a sin
    penitence-to regret a sin

Dimmesdale punishes himself over and over for what he did but he never admits to committing the crime or suffering the social humiliation Hester suffered.

  22. One of the easier questions i would say. Penance is showing sorrow for a sin or voulinteering self punishment.
Penitence is to remorse for your past conduct.

The penance he has showed is what he did with hestor, because he punishes himself so much and often but never does he ever feel regret

  23. Everyone has pretty much covered it all. But i believe penance is punishment. This was showed when Dimmensdale tried to take his anger out on himself. Pentitence is repenting or trying to make up for a sin. This was shown when Hester wore her scarlet letter, and in many other parts of the book.

  24. Penance is punishing yourself for what ever sin you have committed. i agree with carly when she said that Dimmesdale tried to take his anger out on himself to punish himself for what he did wrong. Pentitence is the emotion of regret for the sin that you have committed. You can regret things but it is not going to get you anywhere, you need to fix what you have done to make your future better. Dimmesdale feels no pentitence because he never comes out and says what he did.

  25. Penance is punishment for a sin, penitence is remorse for a sin. Penance would be the things Dimmesdale put himself through to pay for his sin, like fasting but penitence is remorse and since Dimmesdale has had no penitence, that means that he did not regret the sin he committed with Hester.

  26. Penance refers to someone who has sinned and are physically punishing himself in some way. Penitence is different but relates to penance. It means that the sinner regrets it and are sorry for the bad thing that they have done. Dimmesdale's sin was committing adultery, like Hester. He secretly punished himself by hitting himself with a whip and also cutting himself. But in the quote, he is saying that he has punished himself but also that there hasn't been any regrets(penitence). Therefore, I don't believe that he fully regrets what he did several years ago, but does understand that it was wrong.

  27. Penitence is the regret one feels for committing a sin, whereas penance is the physical harming of one's self to "pay the price" of whatever sin was committed. Dimmesdale, knowing the intention, let Chillingworth make his life miserable. Dimmesdale also burned the letter "A" into his chest.

  30. Penance is when someone punishes themself to show they're truly sorry for committing a sin. Penitence is a regret someone has for committing a sin. Dimmesdale shows penance by self-punishment on his own terms. He whips and cuts himself to show he's sorry, but doesn't put himself through the embarrassment Hester went through.

  31. Penance means you punish yourself for your wrong doings, and penitence is the deep down feeling of guilt you get for commiting the sin.

And Dimmesdale inflicts pain apon himself to try to get rid of the pain inside, but never does and never comes clean.

  32. Penance is a punishment to someone, whereas penitence is regretting whatever it was that got one punished in the first place. What Dimmesdale means is that he is being punished mentally for his sin because it tortures his soul day in and day out. This has began to take its toll on his physical health. Yet he still does not have the guts to confess his sin to the people, which shows that he may not regret it enough.

Dimmesdale has been tortured by Chillingsworth for many years because of his secret sin. Also Dimmesdale has been torturing himself by keeping the sin inside himself and letteing it eat him up.

  35. As it has been previously mentioned, penance is self punishment for a sin. Penitence is all the regret you hold for committing a sin.

The minister has a lot of penance in the way he whips himself and keeps everythin a secret. He has more pain than Hester, and only few realize how much pain his penance causes him.

  37. Penance is a punishment for sin and penance is one's regret for sinning. Dimmesdale is saying that he has no regret for what he has done but he has had enough torture. He beats him self up for being a hypocrite when preaching sin and he physically disciplines himself with a whip and by fasting. He has grown very weak and wants to end be set free.

  41. Penance is the punishment for a sin. Dimmesdale decides that for his punishment he is going to hold late vigils, fast, and also self infliction. Penitence would be feelings of regret for a sin. I don't believe that Dimmesdale has fully reached complete regret for his sin. He has some regrets but many come from not admitting that he is Pearl's father.
